Ljubliana, Slovenia

Following our visit to Plitvice lakes, we had a brief stop in Duga Resa, Slovenia. We stopped to rest from a couple of long driving days and the site was super. Plus we got in a couple of rides too. The small town nearby was nothing to write home about (excuse the irony of writing this!) But the countryside was pleasant enough with some large hills surrounding where we were camping.

Although I only went on a small explore around on my road bike I climbed over 1600ft in just 22 miles with the route occasionally being interrupted with gravel tracks… not the best. This meant I had to walk a section so as not to get a puncture or fall. I was in the middle of nowhere, so goodness knows when someone might have come across me stranded there.

Once we left Duga Resa, we headed straight for the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana. Having found a free camping spot in one of the Park & Ride facilities, we hooked up to the free power and quickly had some lunch before venturing out. We immediately realised that the P&R was next to the main train line in and out of the city and that the freight trains were going to be thundering past, but as it was only for a single night we justified staying for free rather than have to search around for another spot. It was so close to the transport links and the centre of the city it made it (nearly) worth it.

After lunch, we jumped on the bus into the centre of the city. It was so cheap and so convenient.

As we walked around the city, it had a very welcoming and relaxed feeling about it, plus less large groups of tourists that had become our nemesis throughout the large cities and attractions.

During our walk we hiked up to the castle atop the hill. The castle was nice, but the view it afforded us over the city was incredible.

All over the city their were sculptures and street art, plus a bridge that had been covered in padlocks, something we were growing more accustomed to seeing on our travels.

As we had enjoyed walking around the city, and we were camping only a couple of miles away, we decided to return to the motorhome for dinner and decided that we would ride back in to the see the city lit up at night. It did not disappoint. There were less people around, but enough to create a nice atmosphere. Many of the building were lit from the front and, as the city surrounds the river banks, it made it a nice place to capture some great shots including the reflections from the water.

Once we returned from out night outing to the city, we quickly settled down for a broken nights sleep.
