Tain, Scotland

After our stopover on the shores of Loch Ness, we were back on the road heading towards Inverness and the official start of the NC500, Inverness Castle.

When we got to Inverness Castle the traffic was heavy and the clouds gloomy, so we decided that we would pass as close to the official start line as possible and then head northwards out of the city. Finally we were on the NC500, a road trip that I have been thinking about for some time. We decided to have a short journey and stop off at Tain as there was a highly recommended free stopover right next to the water. Plus, Tain had the added bonus of having the Glenmorangie distillery, and a tour was on my list of must do activities while in Scotland.

We easily found our stopover point for the night and decided to go out and explore from our new camp. The paths seemed to lead in all directions so we plumped for the one that seemed to follow the coastline east past the local golf club. We followed the path across a small wooden suspension bridge and onwards.

As the light faded, we decided to turn and head back to our camper. As we settled down to cook dinner, we were joined by another couple of motorhomes, which confirmed that this was a good spot for the night.

In the morning we headed to the local supermarket to fill up on supplies before taking the short trip through the the pretty village and ending up at the Glenmorangie distillery (www.glenmorangie.com). I would highly recommend this tour. It was full of interesting information, enthusiastically presented and the walk through the heart of the working distillery was both fragrant and fascinating. We ended the tour with a little tasting session, although we decided to take ours away due to the fact that we were driving further the same day. Once the tour was completed, we jumped back in the camper and, again, headed north to continue our journey.
