Trondheim, Norway

Having left our wonderfully wild overnight stop near Kanestraum, we headed for the ferry only a few minutes down the road. As per our current experience, the ferry was just arriving and within minutes we were on and crossing the waterway to continue our journey towards Trondheim.

The road leading to our next city destination was good so we made fast progress knowing that we wanted time to walk around and see some of the local sights.

As we arrived we drove down some of the really narrow streets to find a parking place that was both free and big enough for us to squeeze ourselves into. We were so lucky, as we turned the corner before we were going to find the main road out of town, a large estate car pulled out of one of the spaces long enough for us with the bikes mounted on the back. We parked, checked the parking restrictions, and they mirrored what we had seen on Park4nite so set out to walk a big loop to incorporate many of the local attractions. The weather was glorious, we were bathed in sunshine and it was warm. As we got out of the van, we noticed everyone was smiling and chatting or drinking coffee with friends or family. Instantly we a great feel for the city.

Our walk took us to Nidaros Cathedral, Bakklandet Old Town, the Old Town Bridge and around the trendy newly developed area of Rosenborgbassenget. It was a great way to explore the city and we were in no hurry and took the opportunity to soak in the atmosphere and watch the world go by while having an ice-cream. Considering it was a town, and we are becoming less and less fans of the big cities, we were really smitten. And the day only got better.

Once we felt we had experienced the city, we decided to head out of town to find another off-grid place to stop for the night. We wanted somewhere quiet to get our heads down as we knew that we were starting the journey to the east coast of Sweden the following day, so were likely to be on the road for a while.

As we left the city behind us the coastline changed again and we were back surrounded by high sided hills and stunning stretches of water. One of the stopover locations that Sarah had found was right in Hommelvik just a few kilometres away from Trondheim. To say the location was stunning would be doing it a disservice!

It was a simple car park next to a beach with breathtaking views across the water. Having arrived, I quickly got the mountain bike off the van and went exploring towards Stjørdal. I cycled along cycle trails, footpaths and coastal tracks. It was fun to have no idea where I was. However, as the light started to fade, and my lights had been stolen earlier in our trip, I turned to head for our home for the night. On my way back around the bay I bumped in to the German lady that we had camped next to while we were in Bergen. I guess it’s a small world in that part of the country.

As I arrived back at the van the sun was setting and it provided me an amazing opportunity to get some shots across the water towards the wooden posts that, in their former lives, would have moored the local fishing boats. Now these posts were home to the local population of cormorants.

An extra treat was cooking outside with that view! Possibly one of the top 5 nicest views we have had from our off-grid camping spots on this trip.

Needless to say, we had a great nights rest and awoke to the noise of the local train station announcements as they started to take people from the suburbs in to Trondheim to work and school.

We had a hearty breakfast and got on the road… towards Sweden.
